The Learning Resource Centre

The Learning Resource Centre at South Shields Community School is a hive of activity. The fun begins at 8.15 in the morning when the doors open to a waiting mass of students, wanting to complete and print homework.

We endeavour to offer a diverse agenda of activities in the LRC, and find that such diversity attracts a wide range of students whose interests vary from chess and scrabble to researching homework, Computer games and using the Wi or Wi fit.

Some Enterprise groups have been taking advantage of our range of books for quiet reading during Enterprise time.  Book boxes can be created for paired and quiet reading if teachers ask in advance.

Renaissance Learning - Accelerated Reader

We are using  a new reading scheme  called Accelerated Reader.  With Accelerated Reader Staff can create a customised reading programme to meet the needs of every individual student.  Using information generated by the software, staff can help pupils select books that are difficult enough to keep them challenged, but not to difficult to cause frustration.

How it works

1 Student reads a book chosen from a selection at the level generated from by the programme.

2 Student takes a quiz

3 Student get instant feedback and encouragement.  The quizzes are fun and the instant report shows how well each student has performed

4 Students earn points from quizzing and are presented with certificates and prizes.

As well as SSCS staff we also have some parents/careres  and grandparents who come into help with the reading. If any one would like to volunteer please get in touch contact details below.

We hope to continually develop and update the resources available in the LRC, from September we would like to invite parents and carers to support the students with study and research.  Everybody is welcome to attend
