SSCS - Science Department

The science department at SSCS aims to teach science with the ‘how science works’ approach in society.  Staff within the science department have experience within industry, government, academia and hospital settings.  This is embodied in our teaching.  In year 9, students begin their GCSE’s, which allows more flexibility in other subjects they wish to pursue once they reach year 10 and 11.

KS2 students are invited to the school on open days and evenings, throughout the academic year.  Students are introduced to science laboratories where they witness and perform experiments they will encounter during their time at SSCS.  Students thoroughly enjoy the exploding can, flame tests and methane bubbles to name but a few!

Key Stage 3
Year 7 and Year 8 students are taught following the ‘How science works’ approach.  Topics are introduced in scenarios which take 3 to 4 weeks to complete.  Students are assessed during and after each topic, with various tasks which allow for differentiation and progress.  Outside speakers in different professions are invited to talk to students.

Key Stage 4
Currently in year 9, students either follow Edexcel GCSE Core Science or BTEC Science.  The GCSE course allows 2 GCSE’s to be gained within 2 years.  Core Science is achieved in year 9, Additional science year 10 whilst some students are offered an opportunity to gain a third GCSE in triple science in year 11.   These courses involve examinations, internal assessments and practical skills marks.

BTEC Science, comprises of 100% coursework including Biology, Chemistry and Physics, all of which must be completed in order to gain 2 GCSE’s within 2 years.

Current year 11 students are working towards GCSE Additional Science.

All students are encouraged to follow the 5 R’s and become independent learners within the classroom.  Students are taught how to plan and write up investigations in relation to outside situations.  Skills are also assessed during practical lessons, oral and poster presentations.  Many enjoy producing academic posters!   Homework tasks reinforce lessons and provide opportunity for creativity and differentiation.
